Into The Mist

Into The Mist

Developing a projection-based mist installation for public space and festival environments

Into the Mist is a water-based projection installation in development, designed to let viewers walk directly through projected light and moving image.

The project began from an interest in artists using smoke, mist, and water vapour as a projection surface, and from a desire to create something that feels less like a screen and more like a threshold.

At its core, the piece functions like a temporary portal. A simple arch structure supports a nozzle system that generates a mist curtain, creating a semi-transparent surface for projection while still allowing the body to move through it.

That physical permeability is central to the idea. Rather than asking viewers to stand in front of an image, the work invites them to pass through it, turning projection into something spatial, tactile, and physically felt.

Visually, the piece is driven by colourful textures and high-contrast black and white patterns, with an emphasis on motion, atmosphere, and immersion. The goal is to create something that feels dreamlike and energetic at the same time, somewhere between environmental installation and sensory threshold.

The ideal context for the work would be public squares or outdoor festival environments, especially in warmer climates where the mist can also function as a cooling element. In that setting, the installation becomes both visual and physical, offering relief, interaction, and atmosphere all at once.

The project is currently in an early prototype stage and still being refined. The biggest challenge right now is developing a nozzle system that produces a finer mist while using less water, making the piece more sustainable, eco-conscious, and viable for public presentation.

Final Thoughts: What interests me most about Into the Mist is the possibility of turning projection into something physical, temporary, and walk-through, an image you don’t just see, but pass through.
